Which device?
Which device gives the best IPTV experience?
Start with what you already own – every device below works. If you are buying something new for IPTV, the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K is the best value in Ireland: it costs around €50–80, runs both IPTV Smarters Pro and TiviMate, and plugs into any TV with an HDMI port. An Android TV box such as the Nvidia Shield is faster and can record, but costs more.
Samsung and LG Smart TVs from around 2018 onwards can run IPTV apps directly, with no extra box. Phones, tablets and computers are ideal for watching on the move or in the kitchen. A MAG box suits anyone who wants a traditional set-top box with its own remote.
Whatever you choose, the connection matters more than the device: a network cable to the router gives a steadier picture than Wi-Fi, especially during big GAA and Premier League matches when everyone is online.
Amazon Fire TV Stick
The most popular device for IPTV in Ireland due to its affordable price, compact form factor, and excellent app compatibility. Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K Max are ideal for the best streaming quality.
Step by step
- From the Fire TV home screen, navigate to Settings, then My Fire TV, then Developer Options.
- Enable "Apps from Unknown Sources" (on newer firmware this may be under Settings > My Fire TV > Developer Options > Install Unknown Apps).
- Return to the home screen and search for the "Downloader" app in the Amazon App Store. Install it.
- Open the Downloader app and enter the APK download URL for your preferred IPTV player (IPTV Smarters Pro or TiviMate).
- The APK file will download. When prompted, tap "Install" to install the application.
- Once installed, open the IPTV player app from your Apps & Channels section.
- Select "Add Playlist" or "Xtream Codes Login" depending on your app.
- Enter your username, password, and server URL exactly as provided in your subscription email.
- Tap "Add User" or "Save" and wait for the channel list to load. This may take 1-2 minutes on the first load.
- Navigate to the Live TV section. Your Irish channels, sport and everything else will be listed by category.
Tips
- Use an Ethernet adapter (available for around €20) for the most stable, buffer-free experience.
- Clear the app cache regularly via Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications to prevent playback issues.
- If the app becomes unresponsive, force-stop it and restart rather than rebooting the entire device.
- TiviMate Premium (one-time purchase) offers superior EPG integration and a more polished interface than the free version.
Android TV, Phones & Tablets
Android devices offer the widest app compatibility and arguably the best overall IPTV experience. This includes Android phones, tablets, Android TV boxes, Nvidia Shield, Chromecast with Google TV, and any Android-based smart TV.
Step by step
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
- Search for "IPTV Smarters Pro" or "TiviMate IPTV Player" and install your chosen app.
- Open the app after installation.
- Select "Add Playlist" or "Add New User" from the main screen.
- Choose your login method: "Xtream Codes API" for username/password/URL credentials, or "M3U URL" for a single playlist link.
- Enter your credentials exactly as provided in your subscription confirmation email.
- Tap "Add" or "Save" to store your profile and begin loading the channel list.
- Once loaded, navigate to the Live TV section to browse channels by category (UK Entertainment, UK Sports, UK Movies, etc.).
Tips
- TiviMate Premium offers advanced features including catch-up TV, recording, multiple playlist support, and a superior programme guide.
- Enable hardware acceleration in your IPTV app settings for smoother playback and lower battery consumption on mobile devices.
- Organise your favourite channels into custom groups for quick access to the content you watch most.
- For Android TV boxes and Nvidia Shield, use a wired connection for consistently buffer-free 4K streaming.
iPhone & iPad (iOS)
Apple devices work seamlessly with IPTV through several well-designed App Store applications. You can also use AirPlay to cast content from your iPhone or iPad to an Apple TV or compatible Smart TV for big-screen viewing.
Step by step
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Search for "IPTV Smarters Pro" or "GSE Smart IPTV" and download the app.
- Open the app once installation is complete.
- Tap "Add User" or "Add Playlist" depending on the app.
- Select your credential type: Xtream Codes API (username, password, server URL) or M3U URL (single link).
- Enter your login details exactly as received in your subscription email.
- Tap "Add" or "Save" to confirm and begin loading your channel list.
- Browse channels by category and start watching. Use AirPlay to cast to your Apple TV if desired.
Tips
- AirPlay works reliably for casting IPTV to Apple TV or any AirPlay 2 compatible television.
- Enable background audio in the app settings if you want to listen to music or radio channels while using other apps.
- iPad offers a significantly better viewing experience than iPhone due to the larger screen. Consider using it as a secondary TV.
- GSE Smart IPTV supports PIP (Picture-in-Picture) on iPad, allowing you to watch while using other apps.
Smart TV (Samsung & LG)
Modern Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) Smart TVs have IPTV applications available in their built-in app stores, allowing you to watch without any additional hardware. This is the simplest setup for viewers who want a clean, single-device solution.
Step by step
- Ensure your Smart TV is connected to the internet via WiFi or Ethernet.
- Open the app store on your TV (Samsung: Samsung Apps / Galaxy Store, LG: LG Content Store).
- Search for "IPTV Smarters" or "Smart IPTV" (also known as SIPTV).
- Install the app and open it from your TV app library.
- Navigate to the settings or "Add Playlist" section within the app.
- Enter your Xtream Codes credentials (username, password, server URL) or paste your M3U URL.
- Save your settings and return to the main channel list.
- Browse Irish channels and start watching on the big screen.
Tips
- Smart IPTV (SIPTV) requires a one-time activation fee of approximately 5.49 EUR per TV. This is a one-time charge, not recurring.
- If your Smart TV model is older than 2017, it may not support IPTV apps. In that case, an Amazon Fire TV Stick is the best solution.
- Samsung TVs from 2017 onwards (Tizen 3.0+) and LG TVs from 2018 onwards (webOS 4.0+) have the best IPTV app support.
- Use your TV remote app on your phone for easier text entry when inputting your credentials.
MAG Box (Set-Top Box)
MAG devices from Infomir are purpose-built IPTV set-top boxes that provide one of the most stable and reliable IPTV experiences available. Popular models include the MAG 322, MAG 420, MAG 424, and MAG 524. These use a portal-based system rather than third-party apps.
Step by step
- Connect your MAG box to your television via HDMI and plug in the power supply.
- Connect to your network using an Ethernet cable (recommended) or configure WiFi through the settings menu.
- From the MAG main menu, navigate to Settings (the gear icon).
- Select System Settings, then Servers.
- Select Portal 1 Settings.
- In the "Portal 1 URL" field, enter the portal URL provided by your IPTV service.
- Press OK or Save to confirm your portal URL.
- Navigate back to the main menu and restart the MAG box (or go to Settings > System Settings > Restart Portal).
- The IPTV portal will load automatically after restart, displaying your channels and on-demand content.
Tips
- MAG boxes provide arguably the most stable IPTV experience due to their dedicated hardware and software design.
- Note your device MAC address (found in Settings > System Info) as some providers require it for account activation.
- Configure Portal 2 as a backup portal URL in case Portal 1 experiences temporary issues.
- Use an Ethernet connection rather than WiFi for the most reliable performance, especially with 4K content.
Windows & Mac Computer
Computers offer flexibility with multiple IPTV player options. VLC Media Player is free and works on both Windows and Mac, while IPTV Smarters for Windows provides a more feature-rich, dedicated IPTV experience with EPG support and channel categorisation.
Step by step
- Download your preferred IPTV player: IPTV Smarters for Windows from the official website, or VLC Media Player (free) for Windows or Mac.
- Install the application following the standard installation process for your operating system.
- Open the installed application.
- For IPTV Smarters: Click "Add New User" and enter your Xtream Codes credentials (username, password, server URL).
- For VLC: Go to the Media menu, select "Open Network Stream", and paste your M3U playlist URL into the URL field.
- Click Play (VLC) or Add User (Smarters) to begin loading the channel list.
- For VLC, the channel list will appear in the playlist panel. For Smarters, browse categories from the main interface.
Tips
- VLC is completely free and open-source, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
- IPTV Smarters for Windows provides a better experience with proper channel categorisation, EPG, and favourites.
- Connect your laptop or desktop to your TV via HDMI for big-screen viewing.
- Use keyboard shortcuts in VLC: Space for play/pause, N for next, P for previous, F for fullscreen.
Troubleshooting
Something not working?
The fixes for the four most common problems. Still stuck? Message support by chat or email with your device and what you see.
Channels not loading
- Check your login details for typos and extra spaces
- Make sure your plan is active
- Refresh the playlist in the app settings
- Restart the app and the device
- If you use the M3U link, paste the whole link
Buffering or freezing
- Test your speed – you need 10+ Mbps for HD, 25+ for 4K
- Use a network cable instead of Wi-Fi
- Pause downloads and other streams in the house
- Pick a lower quality if your player offers it
- Restart your router if it has been on for weeks
App won’t install
- On Fire Stick and Android, allow apps from unknown sources for Downloader
- Free up storage space
- Only download apps from official sources
- Update the device’s software
TV guide missing
- With an Xtream Codes login the guide loads automatically
- Give the guide a few minutes to download the first time
- Refresh the EPG in the app settings
- A few channels have no guide data – that is normal
Questions
Setup questions.
What do I need to set up IPTV?
A username, password and server URL (also called portal URL or host), or an M3U playlist link that combines them. Both arrive by email right after you order or start the trial.
Which IPTV app should I use?
On Fire TV Stick and Android: TiviMate (best overall) or IPTV Smarters Pro (easiest). On iPhone and iPad: IPTV Smarters Pro or GSE Smart IPTV. On Samsung and LG Smart TVs: IPTV Smarters or Smart IPTV. On MAG boxes: the built-in portal. On computers: VLC or IPTV Smarters for Windows.
How long does set-up take?
Five to ten minutes. Installing the app takes a minute or two, entering your details about a minute, and the first channel list load a minute or two. After that the app remembers you and opens straight away.
Can I use the same login on several devices?
Yes – install it on as many devices as you like. How many can watch at the same moment depends on your plan: one on a single-screen plan, two to five on a multi-screen plan.
Do I need a VPN for IPTV in Ireland?
No, not for normal use. Some people use one if their broadband provider slows streaming down in the evenings. See our IPTV and VPN guide for when it helps.
